Opinion Piece: California Bill SB 1348 Clears Path for Universities Serving African Americans
Cerritos College, situated in California, is making notable strides in supporting Black students and setting a precedent for other institutions. Led by Dr. Jose Fierro as President/Superintendent, the institution has been named a 2023 Equity Champion by the Campaign for College Opportunity for its efforts.
With a student population that is 86% people of colour, Cerritos College serves over 1,800 Black or African American students annually. The college has been dedicated to advancing diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility (DEIA) to boost success rates among Black, first-generation, and underrepresented students.
Programs like the Umoja Success Program, the Black/Africana Studies Department, and the Black Excellence Collaborative are pillars of Cerritos College's commitment to Black students. These programs offer crucial support and resources, aiding students to navigate their academic journey seamlessly.
One such resource is The Falcon's Nest, Cerritos College's basic needs center. This hub provides assistance for students, including rent aid and affordable on-campus childcare, ensuring students have the necessary resources to concentrate on their studies.
Moreover, the abolition of remedial education courses in the 2021-22 academic year has enhanced access to transfer-level coursework for all students, especially those from underrepresented backgrounds. This move has been pivotal in levelling the playing field and giving students the chance to excel academically.
If Senate Bill 1348, championed by Bradford-Inglewood, is endorsed, it would furnish increased resources and recognition for Black-serving institutions like Cerritos College. This bill aims to establish a state-level distinction for Black-serving institutions of higher education, further cementing Cerritos College's dedication to Black students.
Ensuring equitable access and opportunities for Black students is a mission for Cerritos College. With its commitment to DEIA and the implementation of supportive programs and resources, Cerritos College is forging the path for a more inclusive and equitable educational landscape.
