Oxford University Offers Free ChatGPT Edu Access to All Students

The University of Oxford has made a significant stride in embracing artificial intelligence for education. Starting this academic year, all students and staff will have free access to ChatGPT Edu, a move praised by Professor Anne Trefethen, the University's Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Digital, who sees great potential in generative AI tools.

The university's decision to provide ChatGPT Edu to all students is aimed at enriching and personalising their learning experience. Meanwhile, the institution is also preparing for the ETIH Innovation Awards 2026, with winners to be announced on 14 January 2026 and featured in an online showcase and the first print magazine of the awards.

Entries are open to organisations across the UK, the Americas, and internationally, showcasing measurable impact in various educational settings. The awards celebrate excellence in global education technology, with a focus on workforce development, AI integration, and innovative learning solutions. Notably, the University of Bonn has also signed up to participate in these awards.

The University of Oxford's decision to offer free access to ChatGPT Edu is a significant step in leveraging AI for education. With proper training and guidance on safe and responsible use, including emphasis on ethical use and critical thinking, the university is ensuring that this tool is used effectively and responsibly.
