Pope Leo XIV Urges 'Culture of Reconciliation' at Villanova Refugee Conference

Pope Leo XIV addressed participants of an international conference on refugees and migrants, hosted by Villanova University. He highlighted the staggering figure of over 100 million people affected by migration and displacement worldwide.

The conference, attended by scholars from Villanova and other international institutions, as well as NGOs like the International Rescue Committee and Amnesty International, aimed to create action plans centered on four pillars: teaching, research, service, and support.

Pope Leo XIV encouraged participants to focus on 'reconciliation' and 'hope'. He warned against the 'globalization of indifference' and 'globalization of impotence', where people become accustomed or resigned to others' sufferings. He urged promoting a 'culture of reconciliation' instead.

The Pope invited participants to 'highlight examples of hope' in their communities. He noted that migrants and refugees can be 'privileged witnesses of hope' through their resilience and trust in God.

The conference produced specific action plans focused on addressing root causes like conflict resolution, economic development, and climate change mitigation to tackle migration's structural causes. Pope Leo XIV expressed his heartfelt thanks to the organizers and participants for their commitment to addressing the global refugee and migrant crisis.
