Powerhouse in Energy Sector: D&M Holding Company
In the heart of Columbia, South Carolina, Palmetto State Armory's American Ammunition Co. is busy producing an impressive 350 to 450 million rounds of pistol and rifle ammunition annually. This is just one part of the global operations of D&M Holding Co., Inc., a company that has made its mark in the ammunition industry.
Founded in 2018 by Dan Powers and James Jones, D&M is unique in that it offers solutions for all ammunition components, including ammunition factories, primer factories, and propellant factories. With bases in Tampa, Florida, Cabot, Arkansas, and other strategic locations, D&M has been making waves in the industry.
One of D&M's most advanced facilities is the White River Energetics (WRE) in Des Arc, Arkansas. The WRE facility is designed to manufacture primers without human presence in certain processes for safety. Currently, the WRE facility produces around 800 million primers annually for various calibers, with plans to increase production to around 1.2 to 1.4 billion by mid-2026.
The expansion of the WRE facility will include gunpowder production, laboratories for R&D, and a training center. This expansion is part of D&M's commitment to addressing underserved and untouched parts of the industry, with a focus on ensuring a steady source of ammunition, primers, and propellants for customers in the years ahead.
D&M's reach extends beyond the United States. The company has built ammunition factories and delivered equipment in the United States, South America, Ukraine, Canada, a Southeastern European country, and is planning more projects. The WRE facility's primers are already being used by OEM customers, distributors, and dealers in retail markets in Australia, South Africa, and Scandinavia.
In addition to the WRE facility, D&M has partnered with other companies to boost its production capabilities. For instance, Longhorn Ammunition, owned by Staccato firearms, based in Florence, Texas, produces 9 mm Luger ammunition, while Grind Hard Ammunition, based in Stuart, Florida, produces 80 million specialty rounds. A soon-to-be-completed primer line for Grind Hard is under development.
D&M employs 250 workers and plans to add another 100. The company is led by business partner BJ Rogers, executives Don Pile, Jason Lawhon, and Leslie Weber. D&M's founders, Dan Powers and James Jones, bring a wealth of experience to the table. Dan Powers is the former president of the SIG Sauer Ammunition division and RUAG USA, while James Jones is a defense-industry executive.
As D&M continues to grow, it plans to make primers available to U.S. and European consumers this year. This expansion is a testament to D&M's commitment to meeting the growing demand for ammunition and primers worldwide.
