Unleashing Punk's Spirit: Rockin' Youth and the Power of Three Chords

Strap on your proto-punk leather jackets and dive headfirst into the welcoming, convivial world of punk - a musical genre that transcends borders and invites everyone to its raw, unbridled celebration. This weekend, it'll be on full display at the Pouzza Fest in Montreal's Quartier des spectacles. And guess who's helping ignite the flames of rebellion? None other than Nicolas Côté, a talented educator and musician who transforms novice rockers into a punchy, punk-powered sensation.

Nicolas, a rock teacher by day and guitarist/vocalist of Dogo Suicide by night, exudes enthusiasm as he prepares for the grand finale of his young pupils' year at the community organization Jeunes Musiciens du monde in Quebec. According to this punk savant, every class he leads turns into a bit more punk, awakening the rebellious spirit within the students.

His mission doesn't stop at school doors. Armed with a passion for punk, Nicolas and his fellow educators hit the road, visiting secondary schools without music programs in their region. By tailoring lessons to the punk genre - a genre accessible even to the instrumentally uninitiated - they quickly turn students into rock-ready, band-bonded powerhouses.

"Punk is a liberating genre," Nicolas proclaims, breaking free from the constraints of traditional music, letting power chords fly on a simple 4/4 beat to feel the thrill of jamming together. Reminiscent of the Ramones' groundbreaking and somewhat chaotic beginnings, their DIY attitude and fresh energy sparked a revolution in the punk scene.

Nicolas doesn't subscribe to musical theory; he's all about the sensation and living the music in the moment. For him, punk serves as a powerful teaching tool for the young, helping them explore the art of music-making through a lens of punk-infused enthusiasm and instinct.

Beyond the Montreal music scene, Nicolas high-fives his drummer-companion Richard-William Turcotte and Emmanuel Canadian on bass as they form Dogo Suicide, a trio expanding the definition of punk by merging it with other rock influences. Invited to compete in Francouvertes, the group showcased their unique sound and left a lasting impression. Soon, they'll hit the stage at the 13th Pouzza Fest on Sunday, performing on the Cabaret du MEM - Centre des mémoires montréalaises stage.

Punk music continues to thrive outside the bustling city limits, as evident in Dogo Suicide's eager participation in the recently established Périphérique Internationale in L'Anse-Saint-Jean, where they'll perform alongside other talented Quebec musicians. Vincent Bélisle, general director of Soluté Records, emphasizes the label's mission to support local projects and cater to musicians hailing from remote areas, such as the Saguenay.

As the outdoor stage of the 13th Pouzza Fest comes alive, trendsetters like the Marmottes Aplaties, Vulgaires Machins, Frank Turner, Subhumans, Fucked Up, and legendary Canadian metal pioneers Voivod will take over. Harnessing the energy of punk, this free, outdoor extravaganza will transform the Place des Festivals into Jardin des bières for one weekend, inviting punk enthusiasts from all corners of Montreal to bask in theDIY spirit.
