Pupils and teachers in Bremen schools are now provided with digital library cards, known as Bibcards.
Digital School Bibcard Simplifies Library Access for Students and Teachers in Bremen
The Free Hanseatic City of Bremen is introducing a new service called the digital school Bibcard, which aims to make access to digital resources easier for students and teachers. The Bibcard is a barcode linked directly to a library account, accessible through a mobile app, allowing users to manage their library loans and access digital content without the need for physical visits to the library[1].
The Bremen library app supports displaying the Bibcard barcode on mobile devices, enabling quick identification and borrowing actions. While the app does not allow for account creation or online media ordering, it streamlines the process by simplifying identity verification and media loan extensions digitally[1].
The Bibcard system reduces administrative overhead for schools and libraries by integrating with school IT infrastructures. This integration gives students and teachers a single, unified access identity, eliminating the need for multiple logins or physical card handling[2].
Finance Senator Björn Fecker emphasized that the digital school Bibcard is a successful example of how digitalization can make life easier. Sascha Karolin Aulepp, Senator for Education, sees the Bibcard as a significant step towards greater equality of opportunity. Lucia Werder, Director of Bremen's city library, states that the digital school Bibcard makes access to extensive offerings even easier and facilitates access to knowledge and information for all[1].
Registration for the digital school Bibcard can be done directly via school iPads, requiring no additional parental consent. Once registered, the Bibcard can be transferred not only to school tablets but also to the wallet function of a private smartphone[1].
The project was financially supported with funds from the special fund "Reinforcement funds" of the Senator for Finance, which is available for Digital Administration and Citizen Service. The Bibcard provides direct access to the digital offerings of the city library, such as LinkedIn Learning, Onleihe, Filmfriend, and more[1].
Books can also be borrowed with the Bibcard. The digital school Bibcard is designed to simplify the registration process for school classes[1]. With the digital school Bibcard, Bremen is taking an important step in promoting digital education, making it easier for students and teachers to access the resources they need for their educational pursuits.
