Renowned Economist Bob Goudzwaard Dies at 90

Renowned Christian political economist and scholar Bob Goudzwaard has passed away at the age of 90 in the Netherlands. Known for his work on the 'economics of enough' and challenging secular assumptions, Goudzwaard leaves behind a significant legacy in European studies.

Goudzwaard's pioneering concept of an 'economy of care' for environmental scarcities, first introduced in his 1970 doctoral thesis, continues to influence thought leaders today. His books, including 'Aid for the overdeveloped West', 'A Christian Political Option', and 'Beyond poverty and affluence', offer insights into his unique perspective on economics and politics.

A professor at the Vrije Universiteit in Amsterdam, Goudzwaard advised Dutch prime ministers and chaired the European Ecumenical Commission on Development. Despite his influence, he remained unassuming, remembered as 'exceptionally friendly' by Jeff Fountain, director of the Schuman Centre for European Studies. Goudzwaard's impact on European studies is being celebrated at the upcoming European Studies Day and State of Europe Forum in Brussels on May 9-11.

Goudzwaard's passing marks the end of an era for Christian political economy. His ideas, however, continue to shape discussions on sustainability, care, and the role of ideologies in society. The Schuman Centre's tribute event ensures his legacy lives on.
