Graduates Prefer Saxony: A Study Reveals
A recent study conducted by the Center for Quality Analysis - Competence Center for Education and Higher Education Research at the Technical University of Dresden has revealed that a significant number of graduates prefer to stay in Saxony after completing their studies.
The study, which was funded by the Saxon Ministry of Science, surveyed approximately 8,000 graduates from the examination year 2019/2020, as well as earlier cohorts. The survey covered graduates from all Saxon state universities and colleges, including art colleges, making it a comprehensive representation of the region's educational landscape.
The study found that an impressive 94 percent of graduates would choose to study in Saxony again, given the chance. While the study did not directly address the reasons for this preference, several factors are likely to contribute to this trend.
Economic Opportunities and Job Market
One of the key factors could be the diverse job market in Saxony. Cities like Dresden and Leipzig have a strong economy, with a mix of industries, including tech, manufacturing, and services. This provides graduates with a diverse range of job opportunities. Moreover, the region supports innovation and entrepreneurship, making it an attractive place for young professionals looking to start their careers or even their own businesses.
Cultural and Lifestyle Factors
Saxony also offers a rich cultural heritage, with historical landmarks, vibrant cultural scenes, and a high quality of life. These elements can appeal to graduates seeking a balanced lifestyle. Additionally, the cost of living in Saxony can be lower compared to other major German cities, making it an attractive place for young professionals to start their careers.
Supportive Environment for Graduates
Universities in Saxony often have strong connections with local industries, providing students with opportunities for internships and job placements. Initiatives and programs aimed at supporting graduates in their career development may also encourage them to stay in the region.
Networking Opportunities
Staying in Saxony allows graduates to maintain professional networks established during their studies, which can be beneficial for career advancement.
Government Support and Policies
The state or local government might offer incentives or support for young professionals to stay and contribute to the local economy.
The study was conducted for the fourth time, after 2009, 2013, and 2018. Among graduates with a master's, diploma, or state exam in 2019/20, the employment rate was 47 percent immediately after graduation and 84 percent 36 months later. Interestingly, the values in teaching and engineering sciences were highest, with over 60 percent of respondents saying they would study these subjects again.
The survey evaluated around 15,000 questionnaires, and more than 56 percent of those surveyed said they would choose the same subject at the same university today.
This study underscores the attractiveness of Saxony as a destination for higher education and career opportunities. With its diverse job market, rich cultural heritage, supportive environment, and government support, it's no wonder that so many graduates choose to stay in Saxony after graduation.
