Revamping Music Sectors through Student Internships
Madison Dorsett, a fourth-year music performance major at the UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music, is making a significant impact in the music industry and championing diversity and representation.
Dorsett's journey began in 2020 when she and a schoolmate formed the school's first Undergraduate Student Advisory Board (2020-21), a platform designed to bridge communication between faculty and students, especially in a remote setting.
In the same year, Eileen L. Strempel, the inaugural dean of The Herb Alpert School of Music, was impressed by Dorsett's proactive approach and entrepreneurial spirit. Strempel recommended Dorsett for a summer internship opportunity at Full Stop Management, a prestigious management company that represents globally renowned clients such as Lizzo, Harry Styles, and Gwen Stefani.
Dorsett was selected for the opportunity at Full Stop Management, where she has been overseeing day-to-day scheduling and budgeting for various projects, gaining valuable experience in finance despite limited experience. Her work at Full Stop Management aligns with one of the goals of the dean's board of advisors, which is to connect students with opportunities that prepare them for careers in the global music business.
In addition to her work at Full Stop Management, Dorsett is also an intern with the Los Angeles Philharmonic and serves as the vice president of operations for the Chromatic Brass Collective, a non-profit organization she helped create. The Chromatic Brass Collective includes UCLA alumni and aims to build a community for BIPOC female and gender non-conforming brass players from across the country.
Dorsett's work with both organizations reflects her mission to provide a space where BIPOC women can feel a sense of belonging in these spaces. She finds it empowering to have a voice at the table as the only Black, Indigenous, Person of Color (BIPOC) within her cohort at Full Stop Management.
Dorsett aspires to establish a "new normal" in the music industry and hopes to inspire young BIPOC girls to make an impact and be part of a new movement of representation and understanding. After graduation in spring 2022, she plans to continue performing and focusing on her work at the Chromatic Brass Collective.
Dorsett's journey is a testament to her dedication, passion, and vision for change in the music industry. Her work serves as an inspiration for many, demonstrating that with perseverance and a proactive approach, one can make a significant impact in their chosen field.
