August 2023: A Month of Enchanting Tales at the Carterhaugh School
Prepare to immerse yourself in a magical world of folklore and literature as the Carterhaugh School of Folklore and the Fantastic presents a series of captivating events this August. The highlight of the month is the participation in the Dublin Irish Festival in Columbus, Ohio, where folklorists Sara Cleto and Brittany Warman will lead intriguing discussions on Irish mythology and its influence on classic works of literature.
The festival kicks off on August 1st and continues until the 3rd. Among the scheduled talks, two stand out: "Oscar Wilde's The Picture of Dorian Gray and Irish Fairylore" from 1:30 PM to 2:15 PM, and "Irish Folklore and Bram Stoker's Dracula" at 5:30 PM, both delving into the rich tapestry of Irish folklore.
For those interested in the enchanting world of fairy tales, the August Fairy-Tale Salon is not to be missed. On August 26 at 7:00 PM ET, gather around to share your favorite poem and explore its connections to the world of fairy tales.
The School's offerings extend beyond the Dublin Irish Festival, with a mini-course titled "Find Your Fairy Tale" available for $17, offering connections to the world of fairy tales and personal stories.
In addition to these events, the School is hosting a book club event to discuss Anne Ursu's Not Quite a Ghost, a middle-grade novel about a haunted house and changing friendships, on August 19 at 7:00 PM ET. The book has received positive reviews from publications such as School Library Journal, Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books, and New York Times-bestselling author Claire Legrand. Participants must be on the $7+ tier on the organizer's Patreon for August to join.
Hans Christian Andersen's "The Little Mermaid" is a haunting narrative that frequently leaves readers unsettled. Unlike the Disney version, Andersen's mermaid fails to meet the terms of the sea witch's bargain and dies, her heart filled with longing: longing for love, longing for a human soul, longing to be part of a world that seems forever closed to her. Folklorists Cleto and Warman will discuss the literary and folkloric tales that inspired "The Little Mermaid" and its contemporary retellings.
All events will take place in the Spoken Word tent at the Dublin Irish Festival, with the August Fairy-Tale Salon being held online. To join the August Fairy-Tale Salon or the book club event, participants must be on the Salonnières tier or higher on the organizer's Patreon for August.
