Rwanda's Ministry of Justice Wins Big for Innovative Access to Justice Initiatives
Rwanda's Ministry of Justice has been recognised for its innovative work in promoting access to justice. The ministry won two awards at an event in Zanzibar on 7 March 2024, during the Law Ministers Meeting. The awards, which recognise government initiatives that use innovation to provide access to justice for vulnerable people, contributing to Sustainable Development Goal 16.3, were presented by the Secretary-General, the Rt Hon Patricia Scotland KC.
The Ministry of Justice's Abunzi (Mediators) Committee Project and its integrated electronic case management system were both honoured. The Abunzi project uses local mediators to resolve disputes, while the electronic system streamlines case management. Meanwhile, a pan-African team led by Loretta Joseph won the second Pro Bono Heroes Award for developing a legal framework for virtual assets. This award recognises individuals or organisations that provide free legal support using technology. Kenya's Office of the Registrar Magistrates Courts also won an award for its small claims court, which has resolved over 50,000 cases in the past three years.
The awards highlight the innovative approaches being taken by Rwanda and Kenya to improve access to justice. The Secretary-General praised both countries for their work in this area, which contributes to the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals.
