In the university town of Marburg, the 2025/2026 school year began with a special initiative to ensure the safety of its youngest residents. First-grade students at the West Combined Primary Schools in Cyriaxweimar received a children's safety vest from the city, as part of an ongoing six-year tradition.

Mayor Nadine Bernshausen, who also serves as the School Department Head, distributed 660 yellow warning vests to the new students. The vests, intended for students attending primary or special needs schools in Marburg, are designed to make the children more visible during their school journey.

The children were told that the warning vests would make them 'shine' during their school journey, and they were also told they are 'real superheroes in traffic' with their new vests. School principal Ulrich Thode and class teacher Nora Claar were present during the vest distribution.

Walking to school can help reduce parent taxis and traffic congestion in front of schools. To further promote safety, poster stands and banners have been set up in Marburg to remind road users that many students are on the move and that children need to be paid special attention.

It is recommended that family members practice the school route with the children beforehand. Students are advised to wear bright clothing, attach reflectors to their school bags, and wear the warning vests for increased visibility.

The 'Walk to School' action is supported by the city of Marburg, encouraging students to gain experience in traffic and walk the school route together with other students. The city also offers a newsletter subscription for regular updates from the town hall and city life.

Particular caution is advised by the city during the start of the school year, as the school route is new and exciting for all new students. With the distribution of the children's safety vests, Marburg continues its commitment to ensuring the safety of its young students as they make their way to school each day.
