School Flyer Campaign by Identitarians: A Concerning Trend for Young Minds

Schoolgoers receive literature distributed by identity advocates

Here's the lowdown on the recent school flyer distribution by the Identitarian Movement (IB), a far-right group known for their extremist and racist views. They've been making headlines in federal states like Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg, sparking concerns about the potential recruitment of young minds.

The IB, often labeled as a "patriotic youth movement," has been active across Germany with regional subgroups and heavy social media presence, according to the domestic intelligence agency. They primarily target young people, spreading their divisive messages on the internet and through public displays.

The recently circulated flyers carry the title "Teachers hate these questions," which seems innocuous at first glance. However, the reverse side of these flyers digs into various political issues. For example, they suggest that German youth is increasingly becoming a minority and that mass immigration leads to higher crime rates, particularly against women. These assertions fuel distrust towards those with a migrant background, as reported by the Southwest domestic intelligence agency.

But, it's not all doom and gloom. The flyers also play on the fears of the future, offering "Remigration" as a solution to all problems and urging youth to "Fight back!" and join the Identitarian Movement. The IB aims to recruit new members in the youth sector, according to the domestic intelligence agency.

Rolf Frankenberger, an expert at the Institute for Right-wing Extremism Research at the University of Tübingen, warns of the IB's ability to mislead young people. He believes that the IB is often skilled at inflating their perceived importance with such actions, but the real danger lies in their potential to radicalize the youth in right-wing echo chambers. The IB's target age group is estimated to be between 13 and 16 years old, a vulnerable demographic struggles with identityquestions and puberty.

Recognizing the gravity of the situation, the Ministry of Education in Bavaria emphasizes that schools can reach out to regional commissioners for democracy and tolerance in case of extremist incidents. They also stress the importance of teaching plans that integrate extremism prevention and visits to concentration camp memorials. The introduction of the "Constitution Quarter Hour" in Bavaria is aimed at strengthening awareness of fundamental values like freedom, human dignity, and the rule of law.

In neighboring Baden-Württemberg, the Ministry of Education acknowledges disinformation as a threat to social cohesion. they've set up a task force to bolster media and democracy education in schools and plan to introduce a new subject called "Computer Science and Media Education" in secondary schools, teaching students to critically evaluate information and sources.

Despite the ongoing efforts, it's essential to remain vigilant and address these concerns head-on. From Frankenberger's perspective, instead of discarding the flyers, they should be brought to class and discussed. These issues are your life—understanding and debating them will empower you to make informed choices and stand strong against fear and division.

[1] Note: As of the time of this article, no direct links between the AfD and Identitarian Movement were established in early 2024. The events mentioned are based on speculation and public concern.

  1. The Identitarian Movement's community policy, which was demonstrated through their school flyer campaign, seems to predominantly focus on subjects like politics, general news, and crime-and-justice, potentially aiming to influence the education-and-self-development and lifestyle of young minds.
  2. The school flyers distributed by the Identitarian Movement not only promote their divisive messages but also offer vocational training in the form of "Remigration," indicating a strategic attempt to recruit new members in the youth sector.
  3. Experts like Rolf Frankenberger advise that instead of dismissing such flyers, they should be used as learning materials in classroom discussions, focusing on education-and-self-development and teaching students to critically evaluate information and sources, such as those related to vocational training offers.
