Schools in the city distribute 660 safety vats to graduating students
In the university town of Marburg and the city of Bergisch Gladbach, a new school year has begun with a focus on child safety. Mayor Nadine Bernshausen of Bergisch Gladbach recently distributed 660 children's warning vests to new students in the city, emphasising the importance of visibility and safety during their school journey.
This practice is not new in Marburg, where the city has been distributing these vests for six years. The yellow vests, designed to make children more visible, were also distributed at the start of the 2025/2026 school year.
During the distribution, the children were told they were "real superheroes in traffic" with their warning vests. The school principal of the West Combined Primary Schools, Ulrich Thode, and class teacher Nora Claar were also present, encouraging the students to wear the vests and follow safety guidelines.
The "Walk to School" campaign, which encourages students to walk to school to reduce traffic congestion, is also supported in Marburg. The university town urges students to wear bright clothing, attach reflectors to their school bags, and walk the school route together with other students to gain traffic experience and reduce parent taxis.
In addition, the city of Marburg offers a newsletter to keep residents informed about important news from the town hall and city life. Signs and banners are put up in Marburg to remind road users that school has started and to pay special attention to the children.
Meanwhile, in Bergisch Gladbach, the city administration has also taken steps to ensure the safety of the school route. During the distribution, Mayor Bernshausen addressed the children, reminding them of the importance of following safety guidelines and the role they play in maintaining a safe environment for all.
The distribution of children's warning vests in both cities is part of a broader effort to prioritise child safety and promote safe walking habits among students. As the school year continues, both cities will remain vigilant in their efforts to ensure the safety of their young residents.
