School's Second Floor Transformed in €750K Renovation Boosting Acoustics & Safety

A school has undergone a significant renovation, transforming its second floor and improving facilities for both students and staff. The project, driven by a desire for better acoustics, also saw the repurposing of spaces and an increase in safety features.

The renovation began with a focus on acoustics in three classrooms. To achieve this, the existing pumice ceiling required hazardous material renovation and the installation of wide-span supports. The school worked closely with planners, including Mirja Montag, throughout the project, ensuring works were carried out during and outside of school hours.

The vacant janitor's apartment on the second floor was transformed into new classrooms, while two ground-floor rooms were combined to create a spacious teacher's room. An adjacent classroom was also converted into three offices, providing more functional spaces for staff. The final phase saw the addition of unisex toilets for staff on the second floor.

The renovation not only improved acoustics but also enhanced spatial learning and working conditions, according to Annette Berg, the school's deputy director. The area previously heated by the janitor's gas boiler was connected to the central heating system, and two emergency exits were installed in the basement to meet fire safety requirements.

The total cost of the renovation was approximately 750,000 euros, under the initial estimate by around 150,000 euros. The project has successfully transformed the school's spaces, improving facilities and safety for both students and staff.
