Sochi School Competition Sparks Controversy With 'Foreign Agent' Rap Lyrics
A school competition in Sochi recently sparked controversy when it included a task featuring lyrics from Oxymiron, a rapper designated as a 'foreign agent' by Russian authorities. The task involved 11th graders completing a rap diss track lyric by filling in missing words.
Salahiddin Tursunbaev, the director of the Center for Creative Development and Humanitarian Education in Sochi, was looking into whether Oxymiron's lyrics were indeed part of the competition tasks. The Sochi authorities confirmed that the lyrics were used, stating it was a legitimate task for studying the Russian language.
Administrators have since emphasized that language teachers cannot be expected to know all the authors of modern music and will take measures to prevent similar situations in the future. Olga Medvedeva, the head of the education department in Sochi, was unavailable for comment at the time of this report.
The use of Oxymiron's lyrics in the Sochi school competition has raised questions about the appropriate use of modern music in educational settings. While the task was intended to help students study the Russian language, the rapper's status as a 'foreign agent' has brought the matter to the attention of authorities. Steps are being taken to ensure such incidents are avoided in the future.
