Spaceman Performs John Williams' 'Star Wars' Melody on Violin in Historic First during Space Expedition
Space Violinist Plays First Violin Solo in Outer Space
In a groundbreaking event, Sarah Gillis, a SpaceX astronaut and violinist, performed John Williams' ethereal composition, 'Rey's Theme', becoming the first person to play a violin solo in space. This historic performance took place aboard the Crew Dragon spacecraft, as part of the privately crewed Polaris Dawn mission, during a five-day orbit around Earth.
The performance was a collaboration between St Jude Children's Research Hospital and El Sistema USA, and aimed to inspire young minds while raising funds for both organisations. Gillis, who credits her classical training on the violin to her mother, a music teacher, chose to support El Sistema USA because she believes every child deserves access to music education, regardless of circumstance.
The 'Harmony of Resilience' concert, as it was named, was synchronized with musicians on Earth, including a symphony orchestra in Los Angeles and child musicians in Haiti, Sweden, and Venezuela. The spacewalk during the mission tested out SpaceX's new EVA suits, which could enable future missions both in orbit around Earth and further out into space, potentially on the moon or Mars.
Gillis and Polaris Dawn mission commander Jared Isaacman performed a 106-minute spacewalk outside the Dragon spacecraft, setting a new record for human spaceflight, reaching 875 miles above Earth. The performance was transmitted to Earth through the Starlink satellite.
'Rey's Theme', which symbolizes unity and hope, highlighting the resilience and potential of children everywhere, was composed by John Williams for Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Gillis stated that music has been a defining force in her life, thanks to the unwavering support of her parents.
The video of her performance was released on 13 September, marking a significant milestone in the fusion of music and space exploration. This historic event not only showcases the advancements in space travel but also underscores the power of music as a unifying force, transcending boundaries and inspiring hope.
