Spain's Mondiacult 2025: AI, Culture, and Peace Discussed, US Absent
Spain recently hosted the 2025 Mondiacult conference in Barcelona, bringing together over 150 ministers of culture and thousands of organizations. The event, UNESCO's World Conference on Cultural Policies and Sustainable Development, aimed to discuss AI's impact on culture and promote peace. Notably, neither Israel nor the United States attended due to the latter's withdrawal from UNESCO in 2026.
The conference followed up on agreements from the 2022 Mondiacult in Mexico. It resulted in a declaration of intent to guide cultural policies over the next five years. This declaration emphasizes placing cultural rights at the center of public policies and integrating culture into the UN's post-2030 development agenda. It also proposes equalizing cultural diversity and biodiversity, and protecting creators from AI's impacts.
Spain, during the conference, hosted an exhibition titled 'Gaza through their eyes'. This exhibition featured photographs taken by UNRWA photojournalists, documenting life in Gaza under Israeli siege. The conference agreed to produce a First Global Report on Cultural Policy, highlighting the investment gap between the global North and South in cultural spending.
Spain pledged €200,000 to UNESCO's Gaza reconstruction fund, with part of the sum allocated for psychosocial aid for students and heritage protection. The next Mondiacult conference is expected to take place in 2027, although the hosting nation remains undetermined.
