Student from Elgin Community College apprehended by ICE, college confirms

In an unexpected turn of events, a student was taken into custody by the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) near Elgin Community College's main campus on Thursday. The arrest occurred in the morning in a parking lot outside a main campus building, causing a ripple of concern among students.

The college confirmed that this appears to be an isolated incident and does not share students' immigration status. The student taken into custody has not been publicly named due to privacy protections and the ongoing federal process. Neither school nor immigration enforcement officials have identified the student or the circumstances surrounding their arrest.

The president of the Elgin Community College Faculty Association, Dan Kernler, expressed shock about the arrest. He stated that detaining students on campus creates lasting harm and has no place in communities. Another student shared similar sentiments, expressing concern about their safety and the safety of other students, adding that they thought college campuses would be safe from such activities.

Kernler further believes that college students and their families should never be separated due to their immigration status. He also stated that this incident underscores the need for comprehensive immigration reform.

In response to the incident, Elgin Community College is offering confidential support and resources through their student support offices. The school is also in communication with local legislators and community leaders regarding this matter.

Meanwhile, a group of workers was reportedly detained in Naperville, as per a separate incident. For updates on Chicago federal intervention, you can refer to "Chicago federal intervention: Tracking surge in immigration enforcement operations | Live updates".

ABC7 reached out to ICE officials for details on the arrest but has yet to receive a response. The student who was arrested is concerned about their safety and the safety of other students, fearing that anyone who appears to be of a certain ethnicity is at risk of being taken.

Elgin Community College students were on edge Thursday night, but the school's focus remains on supporting students and maintaining a safe, welcoming learning environment. The college does not engage in immigration enforcement and does not voluntarily share information about students' immigration status.
