Trump to Deliver a Fierce Challenge to Harvard University

U.S. President Donald Trump Escalates Criticism of Harvard Amidst Dispute

Facing a legal battle over the revocation of federal funds, Harvard University finds itself under renewed scrutiny from President Trump. The Ivy League institution is currently fighting in court to maintain its right to accept international students, following the Trump administration's decision to withhold billions in funding.

In a recent White House press conference, President Trump expressed his displeasure with Harvard's actions. "Harvard needs to behave," he stated in response to a journalist's question. The university, he argued, is treating the U.S. with disrespect and isolating itself. Trump made it clear that he intends to challenge Harvard, stating that he wants the university to "be great again" but instead, it is seeking confrontation and wanting to "fight." "They want to show how smart they are, and they're going to get a kick in the butt."

The dispute between Harvard and the Trump administration stems from the university's compliance with government requests for records related to international students. The Department of Homeland Security, led by Secretary Kristi Noem, revoked Harvard's Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP) certification, preventing the university from hosting nonimmigrant international students and scholars on F- or J-visas for the 2025-26 academic year.

Harvard has responded by filing a lawsuit against the administration, arguing that the revocation is a violation of the First Amendment, the Due Process Clause, and the Administrative Procedure Act. The university also sought a temporary restraining order to halt the government's action, which was granted by U.S. District Judge Allison D. Burroughs.

Recently, Judge Burroughs indicated her intention to grant a preliminary injunction to prevent the Trump administration from restricting foreign students at Harvard. This decision extends a temporary restraining order, allowing the university to continue enrolling international students temporarily.

It should be noted that this dispute does not specifically involve anti-Semitic protests, but rather concerns the university's ability to enroll international students. Other universities have complied with the government's demands, but Harvard has resisted.
