TU Brunswick to Host 'Universities - Places of Democracy' Conference

The Technical University of Brunswick (TU Brunswick) is set to host the annual conference of the Association of University Chancellors in Germany on September 18 and 19, 2023. The conference, titled 'Universities - Places of Democracy', aims to explore the role of universities in maintaining democratic culture and pluralistic exchange amidst current challenges.

Dietmar Smyrek, the full-time vice-president of TU Brunswick, has emphasised the importance of universities as places of freedom, responsibility, and resilience in protecting and shaping democracy. University leaders, including chancellors, face pressure from various groups, such as students, staff, political actors, and societal groups, demanding changes like ending scientific cooperation and questioning academic freedom.

The conference will delve into the significance of democratic processes as framework conditions for universities, with a particular focus on the role of chancellors. Chancellors, who lead the administration of universities, oversee budgets, finances, personnel, and legal compliance, serve as central points of contact for legal and administrative matters. Lower Saxony's Minister of Science, Falko Mohrs, supports universities as places of debate, pluralism, and critical thinking, aiming to strengthen them through a modern university law.

The Association of University Chancellors in Germany, the central network of leading administrative members of universities, represents their interests towards politics, society, and science. TU Brunswick, committed to being an open and international university, combines various disciplines to find sustainable solutions to global challenges. The conference seeks to reinforce universities' role as pillars of democracy, fostering freedom, responsibility, and resilience in the face of current pressures.
