University of Würzburg Develops User-Friendly Rapid Influenza Test Using Chewing Gum

Researchers at the University of Würzburg are developing a novel, user-friendly rapid test for influenza. This innovative test, led by Lorenz Meinel, detects the virus directly in the mouth using a chewing gum or lozenge, with results indicated by a distinctive taste.

The test, which requires no lab, electricity, or medical personnel, reacts with viral enzymes in the saliva. If influenza viruses are present, it releases a thyme-like taste. This unique feature makes the test child-friendly, as different tastes can be produced depending on the pathogen.

The biopharmacy team is collaborating with a startup for mass production, aiming to have the test on the market in about four years. Once available, it could significantly aid in monitoring infection waves, particularly in settings like schools, kindergartens, or nursing homes where quick clarification is crucial.

Moreover, the test's adaptability to other viruses and bacteria opens up possibilities for real-time tracking of various infections. In the future, proven infections could be logged in an app, using artificial intelligence to monitor the spread of influenza and other viruses.

The new rapid test for influenza, developed by the University of Würzburg, offers a simple, user-friendly method for virus detection. With its distinctive taste indication and adaptability to other pathogens, it promises to be a valuable tool in future infection monitoring and control.
