Vocational Training Change: Direct Transition from School to Fire Department Now Available
The Fire Department Bremen is set to initiate a new training program called "IHK Industrial Firefighter (m/f/d)" starting from summer 2026. This three-year dual training program, modelled on successful implementations in other fire departments, is open to individuals of all genders.
The training program allows for direct entry from school into professional firefighter training. It is a collaborative effort with colleagues from various sectors, enabled by the Chamber of Industry and Commerce Bremen.
The first 18-month phase of the training is primarily completed at a vocational school, where the trainees will study subjects such as electrical engineering, woodworking, sanitation, and metal construction. The second 18-month training phase takes place at the Bremen Fire Academy.
Successful completion of the training awards the career qualification for the career group 1, second entry level of the specialist direction firefighting (entry as firemaster/firemaster). This qualification allows for employment as a civil servant in the operational fire service of the Fire Department Bremen.
The trainees can work at one of the seven fire and rescue stations in the city of Bremen. The second phase corresponds to the established training for firemasters.
